SEWA INTERNATIONAL PROMOTING EDUCATION THROUGH  “READ INDIA – READ KASHI”.

Education plays a central role in an individual’s development and has a cross cutting impact on all the aspects of human lives. With right to education reaching far and wide in India, the dropout rate cuts the effectiveness of the program. India has a school dropout rate of 40% and it’s a precarious situation.
Sewa International has opened 3 education centres in Ramnagar, Varanasi under its “Read India-Read Kashi” program. These centres are opened up with a view to help children in their studies, provide them additional guidance in their problem areas and in turn arresting the dropout rate of these kids. They are evening centres run with the support of Seva Kirana. Initially centres were opened to support the school going kids of the weavers of Varanasi, but other kids from the area have also started dropping in to the centres.
Currently, more than 100 children are taking benefit of these centres. All the children come to centre regularly and their favourite part are the recreational activities planned by the mentors. Personality development activities are also organised at the centres. In the centres:
  • - They are being assisted in the problem areas of their studies
  • - Kids who are lagging behind in class are provided with special guidance
  • - They are given assistance in completing their daily home works and projects etc.
These kids are mentored by the local youths who have completed their graduation and want to contribute to their community.
HOW AN AROGYA MITRA SAVES LIFE
 – Dr Mukund Karmalkar
A medical camp—fixed in Chindanaar Village of Naxalite dominated Abujmarh region of south Bastar—was threatened to be cancelled for certain intra-village rivalry. It was December 12, 2015. A space was requested in a nearby goverment school. I could feel a tensed up Dr Ram Godbole. In a staff room temporarily cleared up for patients’ checkup and testing, a dusty lady walked in with her little son saying that her son takes frequent breaks, while playing and had a frail health. As fear rose in my mind, I nervously put my hand on his chest, and felt the blood rushing through causing chest movement. I called in Dr Ram Godbole and he could also hear the murmur of blood flow. We decided to investigate further. But, it was difficult to explain the parents. The suspicion was that the child had a Congenital Heart Disease but it required to confirm the diagnosis. For that imaging studies were required to be done. We took the address of the child and the Arogya Mitra, Jitu went with parents to his home so that he could be followed up.
Next was the challenge before us about how to image his heart. We requested for a meeting with Dantewada Collector and asked him for permission to use the ultrasound machine at the district hospital of Dantewada. He immediately accepted the proposal but said that I need to conduct a medical camp at the hospital open for all in Dantewada. We decided to accept it as otherwise the patients have to be shifted to a very distant place just to come to a diagnosis.
Dr Ram Godbole worked hard in explaining to the parents the need to take the child to district hospital and which was at last accepted when Jitu told that he will pickup and also drop back the child after the test. …All this took a couple of months to achieve, which indicates the challenge required to be faced to advance each small step in this area, sometimes making you feel why at all we need to struggle? And for whom?
On an evening of February when I was scanning after a hectic medical camp schedule, Jitu walked in with the child into the echo room. Dr. Ram Godbole was there. As I put the probe on his chest it clearly showed that there was defect in the wall dividing upper part of his heart called ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) so the pure and impure blood got mixed up before it was pumped into circulation. It meant that there was no pure blood in his circulation so obviously his capacity to exert was less and development was stunted. ...Dr Ram Godbole was worried as I told him this needs to be corrected as early as possible as the life of child was at stake.
It was a impossible for the family to afford an ICR (Intracardiac Repair) at a distant place. But, fortunately Koparkarji of Pune had told us about an institution in Raipur, about 500 miles off this village–Sai Sanjeevani—which undertook such surgeries.
We took the cue and Koparkar helped us in getting an appointment with the paediatric cardiologist Dr Yogesh Sathe. We travelled to Raipur in April and met him and had a very warm yet robust interaction. As, everything was set and all threads woven the child was shifted with his sister to Raipur by Jitu. Dr Godbole stayed put at Raipur as the diagnosis was confirmed at Sai Sanjeevani. Doctors decided to immediately conduct the surgery on the child and Raju Nag was successfully operated on April 26, 2016. He had got a new life. With a quick and good postoperative recovery.
Raju Nag has been discharged and is normal child now. Koparkarji's Krudatnyata Trust, Pune; Vanvasi Vikas Samiti, Chhattisgarh and Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Raipur, bore all the expenses. It is a success story of organised effort to which Dr Godbole played a central role.
It is a success story of an Arogya Mitra called Jitu Bek. It is a story of weaving a garland for our motherland called Bharat and an experience in national integration. There are many such Raju Nags waiting for us to locate and touch.

Widespread devastation was caused in Chakma villages of Arunachal in the cyclone and floods that hit the State on April 28 rendering thousands of people homeless and killing two teenagers. Property worth crores of rupees including orchards, standing crops and livestokes were destroyed. Even though the local administration and voluntray organisations have provided some relief to the victims, much needs to be done.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers distributed nearly 65 tonnes of cattle fodder at different drought hit villages of Northern Karnataka on May 6 as a part of the drought relief campaign. Prant Sahkaryavah Sridhar Nadgir distributed the fodder to farmers at Kundagola. Karnataka Uttar Prant Sah Sanghachalak Shri Aravinda Rao Deshapande and Karnataka Uttara Prant Sah Karyavah Sridhar Nadgir visited few villages along with other local functionaries and joined the RSS teams distributing fodder. “So far we have distributed nearly 65 tonnes of fodder in six districts of northern Karnataka. It will serve nearly 2,500 cows. Through RSS relief campaign we could reach almost 1/3rd of farmers of these 6 districts” said Sridhar Nadgir. Hadalagi  Village of Alanda Taluk of Gulbarga District, Bharamakhodi Village of Athani Taluk of Belagavi District, Kodliwada Village of Kundagola Taluk in Dharwad District, Chikli, Matkhed, Dabka and Ganeshpur villages of Aurad Taluk, few villages of Bhalki and Basavakalyana Taluk of Bidar District were among the villages where fodder was distributed.

The 47 minutes CD has been produced by Uttaranchal Daiviya Apada Peedit Sahayat Samiti and Vishwa Samvad Kendra Dehradun. Releasing the CD BJP Rajya Sabha MP Shri RK Sinha said the work rendered by the swayamsevaks was very challenging and they did that with perfection. “Only the Sangh swayamsevaks can do such a work without government help. I salute the courage of the swaymsevaks,” he said. Dr Virendra Singh Negi, associate professor in Delhi University, Smt Gita Bhata, associate professor, Shri Madan Singh Chauhan, general secretary of Uttaranchal Daiviya Apada Peedit Sahayat Samiti were also present on the occasion.

DEALING WITH DROUGHT: REVIVING THE RIVER

Latur is in the news for stories on water scarcity. An initiative by various organisations and political leaders cutting across party lines along with RSS workers to desilt 18-km long Manjara River is a story of turnaround with collective efforts
At the time when about 10 states of the country are reeling under severe drought and the government agencies are struggling hard to ensure drinking water, the people in Latur city of Maharasthra have collectively initiated to resolve the water crisis permanently. By collecting funds they have started desilting Manjara River, the lifeline of the city. They have collected Rs five crore for the project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 7.58 lakh. Interestingly, the government agencies had estimated Rs 80 crore, about ten times more, for this work. One more interesting fact is that majority of the social, cultural, religious, educational, market organisations as well as the political leaders belonging to different political parties including the Congress and Samajwadis have joined hands with the RSS swayamsevaks. Veteran RSS leader and founder of Latur Vivekanand Hospital Dr Ashok Rao Kukade was unanimously appointed chairman of the Samiti to execute the desilting project. Shri  Makarand  Jadhav of Art of Living Foundation is secretary of the Samiti.
A total of 12 districts of Maharashtra are facing the severest kind of drought. 20,000 villages have been declared drought affected. 10,000 of them are in Marathwada region alone. Apart from it, one district of Vidarbha and four districts of Western  Maharashtra are also severely affected. The Southern Marathwada region records very low rain i.e. below 50% of the average rainfall. But for the last three years, it has been recording the lowest rainfall i.e. below 40% of the usual rainfall. Injudicious use of water by local people and also the farmers made the problem more complex. “Now the people are worried about the crop pattern that they have been following for a long time. They will have to rethink whether to grow sugarcane or not as it requires more water. The Kharif crop recorded hardly 40 per cent yield. The condition of Rabi crop too is highly pathetic as it could not be even sowed in majority of the areas due to no rainfall. Even in the areas where it was somehow sowed, the yield is hardly 30 per cent this time. As a result there is no fodder for the cattle,” says Shri Arun Danke, Sah Karyavah of RSS Jankalyan Samiti Maharashtra, which is actively involved in the fight against drought in Latur and Marathwada region.

Check Dam Wado Bhai
According to reports, Latur, Beed and Usmanabad districts in Southern Marathwada are severely affected. Both the barrages and the only dam have totally dried becoming play ground for children. All water bodies including the rivers and ponds have dried. Drinking water is somehow being arranged from other areas. It is sure that nobody will die in want of water, but it is also equally sure that nobody gets it easily. Not only the government, but the people too are struggling hard for every drop of water.
The population of Latur is about five lakh. Out of it, about one lakh —around 50,000 labourers and 50,000 students--have migrated due to water scarcity. Latur is an education hub. The Collector has declared that no class or exam will be conducted between March 15 and June 15. The municipal corporation is somehow struggling to ensure 200 liters of water to every family per week. One can imagine what a family will do in 200 liters water in a week. Apart from drinking, they also need water for bathing and washing clothes. “There is huge publicity that water is being transported through trains. But the fact is that those efforts are not going to resolve the problem. Though, we sincerely thank the Railways Minister for this help. It needs some other efforts also,” adds Shri Danke.

Fighting drought with tree plantation
Keeping in view all these facts, the RSS Jankalyan Samiti, the Sewa Wing of RSS in Maharashtra, has started work in all the drought affected districts. They have planned to start at least two projects for water conservation in each district. “The cost of each project has been estimated to be between Rs 15 to 30 lakh. There are also efforts to  arrange fodder for the cattle. Now six fodder banks have already been started in Latur, Beed and Usmanabad districts. Six more are to be started as the funds are arranged,” says Shri Danke.
The biggest project in the form of Public Initiative, which has caught the attention of people all over the country is desilting of the Manjara River in Latur. It is about 10 km away from the city. There are two barrages on it—Nagjheri and Sai—to store water. Separate pipelines have been laid to supply water to Latur. There is a major irrigation dam on the same river about 40 km away from Latur. A pipeline also comes from that dam for drinking water. Unfortunately, now all these three sources have fully dried.
The only permanent solution is revival of the Manjara River so that both the barrages and the dam can store sufficient water. “Now we are desilting the River bad 3 meter deep, 80 meter wide and 18 km long. If this happens, the river will be able to store sufficient water. The people of the city have decided to do it collectively. Good thing is that people cutting across political lines have come forward to resolve this problem. An 11 member Samiti, Sarvajanik Jalyukta Latur Vyavasthapan Samiti, has been formed involving people from all sections,” says Shri Danke.
Prominent among those who are part of the Samiti include Shri Tryambakdas Zanvar, who has been very close to former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh and is former Congress district president, veteran Samajwadi leader Shri Manohar Gomare, private sugar factory owner and renowned personality of cooperative sector Shri BB Thombre, etc.
The work began on Varsh Pratipada day i.e. April 8. Following call from the Samiti for contribution, on first day itself Rs two crore were announced by various people as contribution. “Till now the contribution of more than Rs five crore has been declared. About 50 per cent of that amount has been received by the Samiti,” points out Shri Danke.
Seeing the active public initiative the local Collector and also the State government have extended full support. They have deputed three officers and some pokland machines. “We have come to know that some amount has been approved by Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadanvis, but the Samiti has decided not to take any government help for this project. All educational institutions, market associations, medical association, Bar Council, etc have come forward with generous support. Many people come to our office with financial help everyday,” Shri Danke adds.
At the moment 27 pokland machines and 40 Hyvas are working on the site. “We need more Hyva machines to transport the silt. Normally, there should be at least five Hyvas with a Pokland machine, but we have only 1.5 Hyva per pokland. For it, we have requested the Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has assured full support,” adds Shri Danke.
Till now Chief Secretary of Maharasthra Swadhin Kshatriya, Minister Pankaja Munde, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Devgiri Prant Sanghachalak Dada Pawar, Paschim Kshetra Sah Kshetra Pracharak Shri Vijayrao Puranik, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Sewa Pramukh Shri Suhasrao Hiremath, RSS Jankalyan Samiti Maharashtra organising secretary Shri Sharad Khadilkar and Jalpurush Rajendra Singh have visited the site and appreciated the efforts of the people. Till now about five km long river has been desilted. The entire work has to be finished within next 40 to 50 days i.e. before the start of the monsoon. Film star Shri Reteish Deshmukh, son of former Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh who belongs to Latur, has contributed Rs 25 lakh for the project. He also agreed to be the brand ambassador of the initiative. His elder brother Shri Amit Deshmukh, who is also a MLA, also announced Rs 75 lakh for it. Despite being a Congress leader he praised the RSS leader Dr Ashokrao Kukade for his honesty, dedication and commitment to the task despite growing age.
The collective endeavour by the people of Latur for resolving their water problem has set a good precedent, which may act as a trendsetter for the entire country.

TEMPORARY GOUSHALA BY SWAYAMSEVAKS TO CONSERVE CATTLE IN SINDHANOOR
As part of the drought relief campaign, RSS swayamsevaks started a temporary Goushala at Gudihala Village in SindhanoorTaluk of Raichur District in Karnataka in last week of April. Prant Sah Karyavah Sridhar Nadgir inaugurated the Gaushala. Tirumala Rao Deshpande, noted farmer of Gudihala Village, temporarily donated his farmland for the Goushala.
Due to severe drought, hundreds of farmers of North Karnataka districts are facing severe problems while taking care of their cattle. Farmers have been urged to bring their cattle at the goushala, where they will be taken care of with fodder and shelter till the rainy season begins. “It is free service; any farmer can make use of this facility at the Goushala,” said RSS Prant Karyavah Shri Raghavendra Kagavad. The swayamsevaks have also initiated free-drinking water supply at several drought hit places of Raichur District. They also initiated free cattle feed distribution centre at Ankalagi Village of Kalaburagi District.

ENSURE CHEAPER MEDICINES TO ALL: SJM

National Council Meeting of Swadeshi Jagran Manch, organised from May 21 to 22 in Bhopal, stressed the need of access to cheaper medicines and medical facilities to all. In a resolution adopted at the meeting, the Manch said as the diseases are increasing due to change in lifestyle and India sharing 21 per cent of global disease burden, the people do not have access to health facilities or medicines at affordable prices. The resolution said the medicines are getting costlier due to changes in the 2005 Patent Act, which needs to be amended again according to the changing needs. The SJM said the generic medicines should be promoted. The Manch also said that apart from increasing health budget health facilities should be expanded to the remote areas.

In another resolution the Manch urged the general public to cooperate fully with the public and private initiatives for water conservation, rain water harvesting, prevention of water wastage and water misuse, forest conservation, tree planting and such other measures, which are urgently required for our very survival. Forest conservation and water conservation should be treated by one and all as developmental activities. In another resolution the Manch demanded the Government of India to withdraw its decision allowing 100 per cent FDI in e-commerce, food processing and marketing to protect the interest of the small traders, industries and the farmers.

RSS TO WORK FOR MAKING THE EARTH GREEN

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers in Rajasthan, with the active cooperation of the society, are going to take up a big project to make the earth green and clean. From this year, they are going to plant at least six lakh saplings every year. Apart from planting, sufficient arrangements will also be made for care of the plants. Such a campaign will be conducted every year under the banner of APNA Sansthan. After the global concern expressed on climate change, the RSS Karyakari Mandal meeting held in Ranchi discussed the issue seriously and the workers in Rajasthan were told to formulate effective action plan to executive it.  The decision to plant six lakh saplings is the outcome of that action plan. A new organisation, Amritadevi Paryavaran Nagrik Sansthan (Apna Sansthan) was formed for it. The tree plantation will be made a mass campaign. The saplings will be planted between August 2 (Hariyali Teej) to September 12 (Amritadevi Balidan Diwas). Amritadevi along with over 300 people had sacrificed her life for the protection of trees about 300 years back. The campaign was inaugurated in Jaipur on May 28.
ASSAM CLASS 10 TOPPER IS A MUSLIM BOY FROM VIDYA BHARATI SCHOOL

Sarfaraz Hussain topped the Assam state board’s Class 10 exam with 590 marks out of a maximum 600 when the results were declared on 31st May.  16-year-old Sarfaraz is the first Muslim to pass from a school run by an affiliate of Vidya Bharati, the RSS’s education wing with such distinction. He is not the only Muslim student of Sankardev Sishu Niketan, one of the many schools run by the Vidya Bharati-affiliated Sishu Shiksha Samiti, Assam. The school at Betkuchi on the outskirts of Guwahati has 24 Muslim students, most of whom – like Sarfaraz – have won prizes for reciting the Bhagwad Gita. “They have never complained about what we teach because our emphasis is on academic excellence apart from giving the students a grip on Indian culture and values,” told Akshaya Kalita, the school’s headmaster. Ajmal Hussain, Sarfaraz’s father credited his son’s success to his hard work, the support from his schoolteachers, and also to the Hindu goddess of learning, Saraswati. Sarfaraz was the secretary of the school’s Saraswati Puja celebrations. “The school shaped my life, and I hope to achieve greater academic glory as my teachers expect,” Sarfaraz said.

Titbits

  • A heartwarming tale of friendship took everyone by surprise at the state medical and dental counselling at Chennai (Tamilnadu, Bharat) on June 20, 2016. Varshini S, a student from Samayapuram, gave up a seat earmarked for her under the quota for children of ex-servicemen to her friend Janani N. The girls are from SRV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thiruchirapalli. "I secured a cut-off of 199 marks and I am from a backward community ," said Varshini, who voluntarily pulled out of counselling. "I'm sure to clinch a seat in the general counselling. But it isn't the same for my friend. As a toast to our friendship, I want her to have this." Janani, visibly overwhelmed by Varshini's gesture, said it established the bond between the two girls and their families. "We've been friends since kindergarten," said Janani who secured an MBBS seat in Madras Medical College (MMC). "It was magnanimous of Varshini to let go of her seat. Though the difference in marks between the two of us might just have been 0.25, it would have been tough for me to have secured a medical seat. I owe my dream of becoming a doctor entirely to Varshini." With many students in the 190-199 range, it will be tough for Varshini to bag a seat in MMC, but that does not bother her. "As long as I get a seat in any medical college, it is all right," she said.
  • In Amlidih, a small village of Raigarh district (Chhattisgarh, Bharat), Shri Barun Kumar Pradhan (56) a farmer, has become a source of light in the lives of about 30 visually-challenged children by helping them pursue education through a free residential school, the ‘Netrahin Bal Vidya Mandir (NBVM)’. The school has brought transformation in the lives of the children, mostly belonging to destitute families, who, beside education and sports, also receive vocational training.     I don’t want any blind children to beg on the streets and get exploited. I want to make them self-reliant and have a bright future, Pradhan said. We are expecting the strength to reach 60 in this new academic session as we are being approached by many people in and around the region, he said. The special school, till class VI, also has five visually-impaired teachers, including a married couple -Jaidev Sahu (28) and Kiran Sahu (26). Himani, Pradhan’s 19-year-old daughter is the headmistress of the school. Some like-minded people also supported the founder to set up and run the school, which does not receive any financial aid from the government. NBVM educates the children through Braille and also helps them develop various life skills that can make them self-dependent, said Himani.
    • Hospitalised in Madurai, C Venkatesan, a 65-year-old from Vellore, the recipient of a liver harvested from a brain-dead person in Puduchery, was on cloud nine since the good news of organ donation reached him onMay 26 evening. It was natural for him and his kin to be bursting with joy after a 55-day wait. But S Jegatheesan, 35, a native of Sivaganga, was  even happier. He was the man at the wheel, rushing the harvested liver from Puduchery in little over three hours on May 27. For Jegatheesan, this is the seventh such assignment ever since April 2015. He has transported organs four times from Puducherry, twice from Tiruchy and once from Nellore to Madurai. “I was nervous during my first trip. But I understood my responsibility later: I’m helping to save a life. Even though I don’t know the donors, I feel happy when I’m in the driver’s seat. I don’t feel the pressure of driving at 140 km/hr as police create a green corridor.”
    • It was a heartwarming occasion. Fifty-one underprivileged and differently-abled couples got married on, May 29, at Mumbai's Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre. SOLAR LESSONS THROUGH SEWA
Being one of the tribal districts in Odisha, Kalahandi has been enlisted to be one of the most backward regions of the state. Keeping the deplorable condition of the district, Siksha Vikash Samiti initiated a proposal to run a residential school for the inhabitants of the region as they conformed the fact that the root cause of grief was the lack of education. As per the Plan, the school was established in the early 90's at Thuamul Rampur Block of Kalahandi. This is a tribal populated block inhabited by tribes mostly Kutia Kandha and Damba. The river Indravati starts flowing from Thuamul and most trusted and popularly worshipped goddess of Kalahandi District Maa Manikeswari first appeared on the same place. The residential school plays home to about 163 students and 17 members of staff.
It provides its wards with hostel accommodation and three square meals each day, but the scarcity of power and clean drinking water was a major hurdle for their education and livelihood. With no electricity, students depended on kerosene lamps which had negative impact on their health as well as study routine. The only source of water was from the adjacent river of Indravati that often tends to dry up. With the shortage of water, toilets, bathrooms and suitable sanitation arrangements were not completely installed. To address these obstacles of the school, Sewa International that finds credence in the value of a good education came forward to help the school. Under the Clean Tech Initiative, Sewa International promotes and implements clean tech energy solutions in remote and inaccessible areas of India where power through conventional modes has not yet reached. A survey was conducted by Crux Power Private Limited that resulted in the proposal for the 5kWp Solar Power Plant to operate all major loads including fans, CFL Lights and Computer, Television provision in the hostel and school. As per the proposal, the construction of power plant was completed by the end of April, 2016. The lighting and electrical power support for classrooms and hostel were provided through a 5kWp off- Grid rooftop solar power plant. Secondly, an RO based water Purification system of 1000 Liters Per Hour was set up to cater the needs of the students and also the resident villagers nearby. Along with it, an overhead tank was constructed to meet the sanitation need of the students. The 5kWP Solar Power plant is tentatively generating an average of 20 kWh electricity units per day.Sewa International believes this project would help developing an ecofriendly and disease free environment for the students and staff at the residential school in the Kalahandi district. Further it will be a model project for other residential schools in Odisha.

TRAINING FOR HAND-KNITTING MACHINES IN UTTARAKHAND
While running the Knitting Centres in Uttarakhand, Sewa International found repairing of the hand-knitting machines (mostly from Ludhiana) to be quite a task due to lack of knowledge and training on their maintenance. This resulted in quite a few machines needing to be sent to Ludhiana or even decommissioned. To overcome these problems, Sewa International organized a training for better care, maintenance and repair of the hand-knitting/card machines in its centres. Mr. Alam Singh, who is an expert in this field and runs his ownknitting based business, provided the much needed training at Sewa International's Chandrapuri (Rudraprayag) Knitting Centre to the excited trainees; who were all very happy to know more about the working of their tools.

Constructed 30 toilets in Ramnagar Village, Varanasi
    SWACHH KASHI

‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India, is one of the biggest projects ever conceived on the subject of cleanliness. One important aspect of ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyan’ is to make, India open defecation free by 2019.  Sewa International in support and furtherance of this government initiative, constructed 30 toilets, in Bhiti village, Ramnagar, Varanasi. Some of the beneficiaries, of the program were Rajkumar Sonkar, Sitara Devi, Omkar, Upkar, Jyoti, Gunja Devi and Rajesh Patel. They expressed immense gratitude towards the organization after the construction of the toilets in their houses.
Open defecation free India, would be not only a cleaner India but, it would be a dignified India. In the villages, women face the worst case scenarios, for not being able to use the loo. There are many cases, where women are abducted, assaulted during the morning hours only, while on their way to make the loo. There are cases of men and women being poached upon by the wild animals, during the morning hours. So, by providing toilets in the home, would have a multiple effect on the society. Sewa International with the help of its benevolent donors is working towards a clean India- dignified India.

SOLOR POWER PLANT AT SANKARACHARYA KANYA ASHRAM

Sewa International has been supporting the Sankaracharya Kanya Ashram, Jaleshpata, Kandhamal, Odisha. It is a Girls’ school cum hostel facility, housing 190 students. The school was facing the problem of severe power cuts. Due to that, after sunset all the activities would sieze. The students were not able to study, more than two hours after the sunset, and this restricted their personal study hours, after schools. Sewa International has decided to support the school, and install a hybrid solar power plant in the school. The proposed plant is of 5kWP capacity, which is to be installed on the rooftop of the school. Although the school has the capacity to be installed with 60kWP power plant but, the current requirement, is way less than this capacity. Hybrid Solar plant is a good option because it is a one- time investment, it is viable in remote and inaccessible areas, emits zero Greenhouse gases, no pollution of air, water or soil. It also provides reliable power supply in all climatic conditions- whether it is hot or cold, and zero wastage. After its installations, students can have longer study hours, students could be provided with electric fans, computers and it would improve the security conditions as well. It will also power the water and water purifier which will provide the students with clean and uninterrupted drinking water supply.

    DAGSHAI VISIT

The CEO of Sewa International Mr. Nishant Aggarwal visited, Shanti Niketan Hostel in Dagshai(HP), on 24 Sep 2016. The students of the hostel were given hand-knitted winter caps. These caps were prepared and donated by our Sewa International USA donors through their Knit for Sewa initiative. The team in the USA had worked tirelessly for a month to get hand-woven knitted woollens in time for the needy kids.
Dagshai is a sleepy town at 5700 ft above, near Solan, Himachal with the history dating to the 19th century when it used to be a major cantonment town, famous for its now defunct wholesale market. It retains little of the colonial history but for our hostel. Shanti Niketan hostel building, which was donated by Shri Krishan Aggarwal, is more than a century old and still retains its old-world charm.
Currently, it houses 29 children who study in Classes 3rd to 8th, from various rural/slum areas of districts Shimla, Mandi, Chamba, Solan etc. Most of these children have only one parent (either mother or father) and very little by the way of care, food or schooling opportunities at their home. When they join the hostel, they are admitted to nearby Govt Middle School, Dagshai for regular schooling. In the hostel, they get nutritious food, help in doing homework, lots of physical games and moral/ethical education. Most of the students have represented their school at State Level events in Athletics, Volleyball & Badminton.
The school lacks in Digital Education, science lab, and computer lab. The school could also use an evening learning center. The capacity of the hostel can also be doubled but lacks resources. Sewa International continues to serve the need of the students and cause of education around the globe.

DISTRIBUTION OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN UTTARAKHAND

Musical Instruments were distributed among the women SHGs in Pokhari and Devar villages of Chamoli district, on 22 Nov 2016. The contribution was made by Mr Ashok Goyal. Apart from their assigned activities, these women SHGs work as the frontline in many of our initiatives in the state. They have monthly meetings and usual routine of the meeting involves the start and closing with the singing of bhajans and folk songs. One of the songs ‘’Myar Pahad” explains the hopes and aspirations of the people living in mountains, one of the line translates in to ”our mountains have clean air, flora, and fauna, so why can’t our mountains have the amenities of big cities?”.   This small ritual carries with it a deeper message of solidarity and brotherhood, one of the objectives of SHGs in a nutshell.

INSTALLATION OF 5KW SOLAR PLANT FOR GIRLS HOSTEL
One more project successfully got installed under the Clean Tech Initiative of Sewa International. This time, a 5KW solar power plant with 5 hours battery back up got installed at Jaleshpata Kanya Ashram, situated in Kandhamaal district of Odisha. Most inhabitants in the district belong to the Kandha (Khonds) tribes. Keeping the overall situation in mind Late Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati started ashram for girl students near the bank of Rahul Nadi Shiva Pith. It is the place of Jaleswar Mahadev. Swamiji established Jaleshpata Shankaracharya Kanyashrama in 1988. Currently, 240 students are residing and studying there.
The current project aims at providing uninterrupted power to the girl students during night time and also lighting the campus during the night for the safety of the students. This system will produce around 20KW of power every day. The school was facing erratic power supply with a poor voltage level. The problem is resolved now with the installation of the 5KW solar power plant.
DONATION OF MOBILE MEDICAL VAN IN WAYANAD, KERALA
Sewa International donated the mobile medical van to Sri Vivekananda Medical Mission, Muttil, Kerala, on 15 Dec 2016. The inauguration is done by the Shri P N Harikrishnan, Pranth Pracharak Kerala. The keys of the vehicle were handed over to Dr. P Narayanan Nair, President of the Mission. The mobile medical van is equipped with basic equipment. The van would serve in the area surrounding the Wayanad district, especially the tribal colonies. It would also be used to conduct medical camps in the region. The health facilities available in the tribal colonies are negligible and there is a lot of scope for development of the health services in the region. The mission along with the help of Sewa International, plans to create awareness about the health issues faced by the region like malnutrition in the tribal children. In the last 3 years around 350 children died due to malnutrition in the tribal colonies, which also created a huge uproar. The region is facing several issues like this, and Sewa International along with SVMM is working towards a healthier tomorrow, one day at a time.

    SUCCESS STORY - SANJU DEVI
Sanju Devi Goswami, 41, is the village Pradhan. A mother of two, unassuming and ever smiling, Sanju devi is popular among the village folks. She enjoys taking visitors around her home and land holding. After all, it is a perfectly run mixed farm – conventional grains are harvested seasonally along with a variety of vegetables, and flowers. She observes, “I remember when I had come to this village after marriage, farming was the mainstay of most families. Unfortunately, the changing environment and weather have become a threat to our way of life. On my part, I am determined to overcome this challenge.” She is also part of the Haat village’s Self Help Group named Shivshankar swayam sahayata samooh. From dawn to dusk Sanju Goswami is a busy woman. Says she, “The life of hill women is extremely difficult and in families where the men don’t have permanent jobs they shoulder all burden as wives, mothers, and even farmers. A farmer’s life is intrinsically connected to nature – too little or too much sun, rain or snowfall is always bad for the land. Sewa International has helped us many ways, my yield is better and through the SHG, I am saving money every month now.” She has successfully demonstrated how, given the right support, people can effectively adapt to changing conditions and transform their lives. According to her, the time has come for farmers to take all the help they can get and adapt to newer, better ways of making farming feasible. Sewa International is committed to the cause of, not only the farmers but also empowering the fabulous and hardworking women of Uttarakhand.

    SUCCESS STORY
My name is Radhe Yadav, 68years old occupant of Jalahiya tolla. I have been associated with Sewa international for one year.
I was involved in weaving at the age of 13 now it’s been 55years  I am doing this work. Weaving was my family's traditional work, due to financial crises my father involved me into weaving. That time this business was very much needed demand and supply of product were also very high. At the age of 22, I started my own weaving business I was getting good income. My family condition was good. But After few years government stopped all weaving business, due to which demand and supply became less and gradually   there was no work for us. Conditions was becoming from bad to worst. We started searching for other job for our basic necessities of life such as labor, construction worker, carpenter etc. That period lingers on until we met Sewa international.
A year ago we met with the team of Sewa International and they told us about their project of “Kashi to Kutch” and they want to restart the concept of weaving with some modern techniques with the weavers of Varanasi.
Sewa international also provides training programs for our skill development and to make us more efficient. Now we don’t have to go anywhere else for work. We timely get payment of our work. We are very satisfied with this project and our income, They came in our life as a saving hand to provide us employment attributable to which our family condition is also getting on improved.

HANDLOOM TRAINING FOR REANG TRIBE: AN ATTEMPT TO SAVE THEIR TRADITIONAL DRESSING STYLE

Traditional wrap around called Rnai is the essential piece of Bru culture and is the most loved clothing by their women. It is made painstakingly using handlooms with specialized skills. But, due to rapid influx of cheap western clothing and high cost of hand-woven Rnai, this important part of culture is under threat. Sensing this grave issue, SewaInternational decided to organize its first training in Handloom Weaving for producing hand-woven traditional women clothing. The training would provide employable skills to around 30-35 women who would now be able not only produce clothing for their family but also sell at a profit.
At a small event organized at Naisinghpara Refugee Camp, Tripura, on 19th Jan 2017, training was launched in the esteemed presence of Shri Animesh Dev Varma (DC, Kanchanpur) and Shri Nishant Aggarwal (CEO, Sewa International). We were highly motivated by the kind words of Animeshji who had all praise for the relevant intervention and encouraged the Bru community women to take full adavantage of the opportunity. Loom threads were also distributed to the trainees. It was very pleasing to see women coming in large numbers to register though we had to decline a few but we promised them a place in future training session.

    ANOTHER MILESTONE TOUCHED
We stand proud as we have touched 1000 lives, and helped them in their journey toward a secure and sustainable future. Sewa Uttarakhand under its programme Sewa Srujan, has helped in creation of 89 SHGs in the districts of Rudraprayag and Chamoli. When we started our journey the path was very ambiguous and our team worked selflessly in the difficult terrain of Uttarakhand and today we have achieved a major milestone because of the efforts and undying spirit of the entire team.

INAUGURATION OF SEWA YUVA JYOTI COMPUTER CENTER, DEWAL

SI inaugurated its 10th Computer Centre in Dewal on  Feb 5, 2017. The Center has 6 Computers and a Akshar Bharati Vachnalaya. The center was inaugurated by Shri G.K. Soni, Forest Ranger; N.K. Mishra, Retired Principal and Ganesh Mishra Ji. All the guests displayed their enthusiasm regarding the center and how much the expansion was needed because possessing the knowledge of using a computer and its language is no longer a luxury but a necessity given the times we live in. The local students of Deval who were earlier unable to take admissions in Computer coaching centers because of high fees charged in such institutes, were also very happy and excited and so far 15 of them have already registered themselves for the course and the number is increasing day by day.

After few years, Laxmi got an opportunity to be associated with Sewa International, she received training in Entrepreneurship Development Program, stitching, tailoring and design and development. These trainings proved to be a catalyst to enhance her skills and techniques. Her willingness and eagerness to learn more helped her to become a master trainer & resource person for other women artisans. She proudly mentions that she provides training to women of her own and other community. She also manages a women Self Help Group, and now she doesn’t have to go outside looking for work. Many organizations request her to provide her technical expertise to support other women as well. New Horizons: Reang Education Project

Sewa International has achieved the milestone of opening 14 new educational centres (both day classes and evening classes) in 2 refugee camps of Ashapara and Naisingpara. Due to very low availability of schools in the area and extreme poverty within the family, most of the children belonging to Reang tribe, were forced to remain illiterate as education was a “luxury” they couldn’t afford. Sewa International decided to intervene and provide these children good quality education, free of cost. Today more than 200 children are attending these schools and the number of enrollments is increasing day by day. A new hope for change that we strive for drives our action. Result - Reang Education Project .

    Colombia Landslide

An avalanche of water from three overflowing rivers tore through a small city in Colombia while people slept over the weekend, destroying homes, sweeping away cars and killing at least 273 unsuspecting residents. The incident triggered by a sudden, heavy rainstorm happened around midnight in Mocoa, a provincial capital of about 40,000 tucked between mountains near Colombia's southern border with Ecuador.Muddy water quickly surged through the city's streets, toppling homes, ripping trees from their roots and carrying a torrent of rocks and debris downstream. Many residents did not have enough time to flee.Emergency workers and relief teams, including Sewa International, worked hard to rescue and restore the displaced people. They were facilitating the reunion of families who lost communication as a result of the disaster. President Juan Manuel Santos declared a state of emergency. The crisis is likely to be remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in recent Colombian history, though the Andean nation has experienced even more destructive catastrophes.
    Medical Health Camp Uttarakhand
A new step has been taken by Sewa International Uttarakhand in the direction of making people (in this case students) of Rudraprayag and Chamoli district of Uttarakhand more aware about their health. In order to achieve so, several health camps are being organised in government colleges across both districts. The main objective of these camps are eye screening & treatment along with examination of oral hygiene, diagnosis of dental problems. So far camps have been conducted in Simli Govt. Inter College and Adibadri Govt. Inter College, Chamoli.  The camps will continue in all other government colleges of both districts. This year medical camp was also conducted in the district of Majuli, Assam.  Medical facilities, in this region, are non-existent and people from poor background find it even more difficult to approach doctors for their health problems.
Similar problems exist throughout North-East, so to address the lack of medical services, "Dhanvantri Seva Yatra" is initiated every year for a week with the help from NMO(National Medicos Organization) and Seva Bharathi Purbanchal, where doctors from across the country come and serve patients selflessly in the most remote and inaccessible parts of North-East India.
We salute these unsung heroes who are working for the deprived.

    DONATING FOR SOLDIERS
Bhavnagar in Gujarat is known for social service. The city is known as 'Ganda nun Gaam', the city of mental persons, because many mental patients travelling by trains are dropped here and many local people and organisations look after them. Shishuvihar and the late Maanbhai Bhatt are also known for such works. But now three persons of the city have come forward for the cause of soldiers. They are Janardanbhai Bhatt, Rakshaben Dave and Nimeshbhai Trivedi. Among them, Janardanbhai Bhatt is the highest donor. He donated whopping Rs 1.02 crore for the welfare of soldiers. And that too when he lives on pension!
Shri Bhatt retired from State Bank of Saurashtra as a clerk. Janardanbhai is an RSS swayamsevak. He used to go to Neelkanth Shakha held at RuvapariDarwaja. He says, "My all social work is due to the samskar of the RSS. I learnt honesty, sincerity, integrity, devotion and dedication in the Shakha." He worked with Chandabhai Dave in the union, who is among the pioneer swayamsewaks.
From 1970, Janardanbhai started gifting sweets, fire crackers to orphan children. His union donated Rs 1 lakh for electrification of a cremation ground. Janardanbhai has been doing this work because he has great support from his better half Padmaben who is SwadhyayPariwar worker. Both got married in 1955 and their married life has become inspiration  for many a couple. Janardanbhai donated Rs 6 lakh for dialysis to Bajarangdasbapa Hospital, Bhavnagar. His wife gave Rs 16 lakh to the same hospital next year in memory of her parents.  Janardanbhai could donate such a huge amount because his friend’s father advised him to invest in stock market long ago. This investment is now giving good returns.
After his initiative, significantly two persons came forward for donation. One is Rakshaben Dave. She is also retired professor. She has donated Rs 1 lakh! One Nimeshbhai Trivedi donated Rs 25,000.
Rakshaben says, "When the news of video of soldiers complaining about food served to them broke out, she could not take her meal. I thought what could be done for them? Then I heard news that the soldier was detained." Rakshaben thought to do something for soldiers but didn't know how to do. She has written more than 70 books on Hinduism. So she thought, "When there is will, she will find way also." And then news came from Ashokbhai Pandya, a colleague of Janardanbhai Bhatt about donation. She is now thinking to donate Rs 1 lakh more on Raksha Vandan to such souls! -- (Jaywant Pandya from Ahmedabad).
    SUCCESS STORY
Every day now and then we come across a person whose life has been touched by Sewa International, and meeting such person is a fulfilling experience both ways. One such person is Maggi ben. The 26-year-old Maggi had many dreams in her eyes. She wanted new dresses for herself like her other friends and some kitchen appliances for her home. But her family income was not sufficient to fulfill these dreams, hence dreams remained unfulfilled for most of her adult life.  Her husband works in the hospital and his salary is 5000/- per month. They were hardly able to save a single penny after arranging basic things for the family.
Maggi belongs to Rabbari community and she resides in Jiyapar village of Naktala block of Kutch district. She was proficient in the traditional embroidery work. Occasionally she used to do the embroidery, on her own clothes. Maggi was desperate to make some money to fulfill her dreams. She met with the representative of SewaInternational and got associated with the organization. SI not only provided her training on embroidery to develop her skills and make her aware of market trends but also gave her employment with the organization.
She is associated with the SI for five-years now. While sharing her experience she says, “I am able to buy new clothes and kitchen appliances, I am no longer dependent on other persons to fulfill my dreams. I feel proud of myself and now I am enjoying my life”, she says with the twinkle in her eyes.

Inaugurates Hostel for Orphaned Children in Nepal

Fifty boys, orphaned in the twin earthquakes that shook Nepal in 2015, now find refuge in a newly constructed hostel in Dhading, Nepal, courtesy of Sewa International.
In his speech on June 3, 2017, at the inauguration of the hostel, Dr. Sree Sreenath, Director, Complex Systems Biology Center and Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and president of Sewa International, USA, said that it indeed takes a village to raise a child, and that the name of the Dhading Hostel — “Amako Maya Chatrawas” should live up to its promise as the “Abode of Mother’s Love”. He said that local children and youth should interact with students at the hostel and become their brothers and sisters. He urged local village mothers to provide “vatsalya” (love and care) to the orphaned children and treat them as their own children. He said that hostel facilities would be utilised for community development activities such as vocational and skill training (tailoring, health and hygiene, etc.)

Seen in this picture where Dr. Sree Sreenath is addressing the audience are, among others, Bhim Dhungana, the newly elected Mayar of Dhading, who has promised a newly paved road to the hostel — as the current road offers very poor access; Shiv Mishra, Sewa Columbus (Ohio, USA) Coordinator who is originally from Nepal; Shyam Parande, Chief Coordinator, Sewa International, India; Llama Jugdol of the International Buddhist Federation, Nepal Representative, and Chief Guest on the occasion; and Mr. Goel, the Nepal Chatravas Committee Member.

At present, one of the challenges is that the road to the hostel winds through very difficult terrain in the mountains, and the last mile approaching the hostel is extremely difficult to traverse.  The construction of the hostel was challenging because all construction material had to be carried by workers over the ‘last mile’, and since labour in the mountainous terrain is hard to find the construction of the building was time consuming.  Mayar Bhim Dhungana has promised a newly paved road to the hostel.

Dhading, Nepal, where the “Amako Maya Chatrawas” hostel has been built to accommodate fifty children who were orphaned after the earthquake in 2015.

Nearly five hundred people attended the inauguration, and the local youth had organized events showcasing the talent of youngsters in the village.

Seen in this picture is the young audience watching the cultural programme organised for the occasion. Nearly 500 local people and dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Sewa International is committed towards the development of Nepal and specially its young generation. This is one of the many steps to ensure our vision of strong and happy Nepal.

    REANG COACHING CENTERS
Sewa International has been working for the development of Reang (Bru) tribe in Mizoram. Due to the ethnic conflict that took place in 1997, more than 35,000 Reangs had to leave their homes in Tripura, and cross the state on foot. They now live in 7 camps in Mizoram; Sewa International is imparting skill training to the youths living in these camps, with a vision to provide them livelihood opportunities. Sewa International also runs free coaching centers for the kids in the camp called ‘Bru Education Centers’. A total number of 15 centers are running in Naisinghpara and Ashapara camps. The kids belong to all age groups and they study English, Maths, Science, and Social Sciences. The instructors help them with their homework and those who are not yet enrolled in school, are taught the basics informally.  In the evening, these education centers become a hub of myriad activities. Sewa International is working relentlessly for creating a better future for the Bru tribes and moving one step at a time to achieve this goal.
    INTERN ENGAGEMENT

‘Promoting Volunteerism’ is the motto of Sewa International. In our journey spanning across 2 decades, we have come across fabulous volunteers. Needless to say, it is learning and enriching experience both ways. One such volunteer has shared her experience with us. Her name is Nazia Aqueel. Here is what she has to say:
My name is Nazia Aqueel, I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. I came to America at a very young age, so I basically grew up in Houston. When I was a kid, my father gave me a toy box full of things regarding medicine. I fell in love with the thought of becoming a Healer ever since and dreamed of becoming a Doctor. My parents fully supported my childish stubbornness at the time to save lives, and they are the reason I am currently a Pre-Med/ Biotechnology Major at the University of Houston today.

Joining Sewa was probably one of the best decisions I have made during my college years. This organization has given me a dose of reality that has ultimately made me feel grateful for my life, and help those in need. Going to events organized to help individuals and families beyond Houston area, is an experience that makes me feel like I am actually doing something useful. With my age and financial background, there are huge limitations when it comes to being of aid to others. Sewa has taught me that it is possible to help regardless of the giver's circumstances. The people involved in this organization are amazing, and I have learned so much from all of them. I hope to see Sewa grow manifoldly and to be a part of their family for a very long time.

    Raksha Bandhan with our Rakshaks

Sewa International’s Uttarakhand chapter celebrated Rakshabandhan by tying Rakhi on the hands of security personnel from paramilitary forces from Barahot to Tapovan. The women from various SHGs and Sewa Mahila Jyoti program went to the border posts and tied rakhis to the rakshaks (brave soldiers), who risk their lives for our safety and security. The women prayed for their well-being, long life and victory. It was a touching sight to see these brave men moved when tilak was applied on their forehead and the sacred thread tied. Many of these men were away from their families for long. The celebration brought back memories of home and loved ones.

    Independence Day Celebration @ Uttarakhand

Sewa International celebrated Independence Day with patriotic fervour. At various project sites, school and college students, trainees, celebrated the day by hoisting the Tricolour and singing the National Anthem. All the PMKK centres in Uttarakhand joined the celebrations with great enthusiasm and gaiety. Sweets were distributed at the end of the event. Everyone took the pledge of Swachchta (cleanliness) and promised to work towards making the country great again.

    Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey is an active tropical cyclone that is causing unprecedented and catastrophic flooding in south-eastern Texas. It is the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005. What set Harvey apart was its rain. Once the storm made landfall, it essentially stalled, turning roads in Houston and elsewhere into raging rivers.  The hurricane started as Category 1 on 23 August but within 48 hours it rapidly ballooned into Category 4, bringing unprecedented rains. Harvey has caused at least 33 confirmed deaths; 1 in Guyana, and 32 in the United States. Catastrophic inland flooding is ongoing in the Greater Houston area.
It has inundated parts of the Houston area with more than 40 inches of rain. In some places, totals have surpassed 50 inches, setting a new record. Harvey is hitting Louisiana, as this goes to print and is likely to affect hundreds of miles of coastline. It has been called “one of the largest disasters America has ever faced.” The economic losses are estimated to range anywhere from $10 billion to $50 billion.
Sewa USA and its volunteers are working round the clock for the relief and rescue of people affected in Texas. Sewa USA has set up Food Kitchens and they are handing out 2500 meals every day to the affected people. Sewa USA volunteers are working in tandem with other agencies, providing relief and rescue. At least 200 Indian students were stranded at the University of Houston due to "catastrophic" flooding. They were evacuated to safer places and provided food and shelter with the help of Sewa USA volunteers. Sewa is working towards its goal ‘to be first responders at any disaster’, and with the help of an impressive battalion of dedicated volunteers, are providing yeomen’s service and acting as an inspiration.

    North India Floods

All the 6 major states of Northern India are reeling under floods, along with the neighbour country, Nepal. The floods have claimed more than 700 lives and affected more than 21 million people. The worst hit state is Bihar, claiming 514 lives so far and the death toll is set to rise, as there has been no respite from the rains till this newsletter went for print. Sewa International volunteers have been working relentlessly for the relief and rescue of those trapped in the flooded areas. Sewa International has released donation appeals for the same, on various platforms including social media.

    Swasthya Sahayogi Sewa

World Organ donation Day was organized on 13th August by Sewa International at Public Awareness Program Sewa International Office, Tapovan Mandal, district Chamoli. While highlighting the process and importance of Anganwadi through the awareness program, it was told that there is still lack of awareness about organ donation in India. Apart from providing a new lease of life, it could help in research related to human life, medical education and genetic development. There are also various myths and suspicion related to organ donation but there is a need to overcome them, for which this priceless initiative can be stepped up with the help of government / non-governmental organizations at various levels. All misconceptions regarding organ donation were expelled and the process explained in detail. Any medical college, University or any recognized registration platform can be approached for organ donation in person or online. The desired information should then be filled in the prescribed application form. This can be done separately for donating a particular organ or donating the full body. After registration, the registration card is received by the donor like a donation card. To promote this noble cause, many celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan, Vivek Oberoi, etc., have pledged to donate their organs. Sewa International too has aligned itself with the cause. It is leaving no stone unturned to inspire people to come out of age-old dogmas and usher the new dawn of science; helping themselves and human kind, through organ donation.

    Bamboo TOT Program

On 21 Aug 2017, Sewa Uttarakhand undertook a 20-days Training of the Trainers (TOT) program titled ‘Ringal Training Program’ in Subhayi village of Tapovan Mandal. This 20-day program was designed to teach the local women to make beautiful artefacts out of Bamboo. The products made by these women would then be sold on different platforms viz. market fairs, exhibitions, artisan haat, as well as online. A total of 23 women attended this ToT.  Mr. Prem Lal was the Master Trainer. The initiative was a part of Sewa International’s effort towards women empowerment. Sewa International is running skill development programs in various parts of the country, with a special focus on women, in order to make them economically independent, which is an important indicator for empowerment. Sewa International is proceeding further towards the goal of self -sustainability, supporting and realizing the vision of “Kaushal Bharat- Kushal Bharat.” The journey continues with many hues, one among them is this ‘Ringal Training Program’.

    Facebook’s NGO Day

Hurricane Irma:  Relief and Rescue Operations By Sewa US

Hurricane Irma made a landfall at Tampa, Florida, USA on 11 Sept 2017, the nation was still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Texas when the tragedy struck with Irma. Sewa USA having done the laudable job of relief, rescue and rehab of those affected from the Hurricane Harvey, started preparing for the Irma well in advance. Sewa USA volunteers developed a huge and effective network through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp et al. They distributed flyers regarding the safety measures to be taken during, after and before the hurricane strikes. Sewa USA established shelter homes in the houses and temples equipped with facilities to host the affected people. They prepared for the hurricane well in advance. In order to provide shelter homes, the volunteers first identified the host families and prepared them for the task. Then press release was published regarding the list of shelter homes and facilities available to them. The registration desk and hotline numbers were established along with 24/7 helpdesk in various areas in different time zones. After seeking out affected people through various means established and manually, volunteers guided the victims to the shelter homes, where they were provided not only place to live but food, medical supplies and contact with other relatives if possible.
The work of the volunteers was praised by not only the victims but other agencies involved in the relief and rescue including governmental and non-governmental agencies. Sewa USA in a very short span of time has gained the trust and respect of the communities due to their selfless service and respect for the human life and nature.

Solar Power Plants For Underprivileged and Tribal Children in Odisha

The energy choices we make during this pivotal time in the 21st century, will have huge consequences on health, climate, and economy for decades to come. SewaInternational in continuation of the developmental projects in tribal areas of Odisha has installed two 5kWp solar power plants at Taratari Bal Vidya Niketan and Amruta Vanee Sewa Pratishthanam, Balasore, Odisha. These schools provide education in the rural areas of Balasore, with the special focus on underprivileged and tribal children. The 5kWp Solar Power Plant has capacity to operate all major loads including fans, CFL Lights and Computer, Television (if installed in future) in the hostel and school. The 5kWP Solar Power plant is tentatively generating an average of 20 kWh electricity units per day. Sewa International believes that Energy efficiency is a key step to reducing our impact on climate change and creating a sustainable energy in future. This project would help developing an eco-friendly environment and it could develop to become a model project for the energy deficient and remote areas of the country.

Hurricane Harvey: Sewa USA at Work

When nature strikes, the best and most equipped can still be left floundering. Hurricane Harvey, the costliest natural disaster in US history left 200,000 homes destroyed, but the initiative of  Sewa USA volunteers have done laudable work in one of the most amazing relief operations.
Hurricane Harvey, the costliest natural disaster in US history, slammed the Greater Houston area on 25 August 2017 inundating homes, roads, and buildings, and affected one in four Houstonians, as rain poured in a deluge for almost a week. Thirty-three trillion gallons of water got dumped on the region! The damage was so severe that more than 200,000 homes were destroyed (50,000 in Houston alone), a million cars wrecked, and metro stations, schools, highways and other public facilities flooded. Hurricane Harvey is being considered the largest calamity in the United States in recent memory. The economic devastation is estimated by the Texas Governor’s office at more than $180 billion, and that it may take five years to rebuild.
Caught in the hurricane were 150,000 people of Indian origin, with one in six, marooned, evacuated or needing rescue. Among them were 247 students from India studying at the University of Houston. Many of these students, motivated by the rescue efforts by Indian-American teams, joined as volunteers, making their first American experience a truly life-affirming experience.
Sewa International coordinated efforts to bring together over 800 volunteers for the critical rescue effort. Sewa volunteers sprang into action even though some of their own homes had been flooded and they and their families had to move into friends’ homes and hotels. A hundred Sewa volunteers from its 41 chapters across the United States joined hands working remotely on the rescue and relief coordinating fund-raising, communication, social media updates, etc.
As the rain and wind abated, volunteers have switched to providing relief to the hurricane’s victims by organizing health clinics, cleaning the flooded homes, and providing hot meals by coordinating work with a network of partner organizations.
Sewa International raised $250,000 in the first 10 days. Volunteers served hot meals; provided food, water, supplies and medical support; arranged temporary housing; and began helping in cleaning up homes of the underserved and economically-challenged minorities – Hispanics, African Americans, Cambodian Americans, senior citizens, and single mothers. Its volunteers actively worked in five different suburbs around the Houston metro area. They delivered 1,000 hot meals a day to various shelters in the first 10 days. With the help of the various local organizations, they provided food and supplies for 5,000 hurricane victims. Ten trucks of water and food supplies were sent to various shelters in Houston and nearby small towns, thanks to the generous community of Indian business owners. In many areas of the city, volunteers reached distressed people much earlier than a big organization like the Red Cross did. In fact, Sewa International has been at the forefront of rescue and relief from the day the hurricane hit. Volunteers worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the US Coast Guard and other agencies in rescue and relief. With a 24/7 telephone hotline and a band of dedicated volunteers monitoring social media, SewaInternational pitched in with more than its expected weight.

Generating Livelihoods for Local Tribal People in Tripura

Education forms an important vertical in all the projects of Sewa International. The education projects of Sewa International benefit more than 2 lakh kids across the country. The experience of being associated with kids has been overwhelming and enriching. The innocent and joyous smile of children is the perk like none. But it was heart-breaking to see our Bru Tribal kids struggle with their studies while sitting on the bamboo thatch due to make-shift arrangements in our tutors' homes (which also serve as Sewa International Bharat's Remedial Education Centres in Refugee Camps in Tripura), so we thought of re-purposing the ever-visible portable lap desk design as a study-desk for these students. Idea is to generate local tribal livelihoods for anything we do, so preparing the first few wooden samples locally, which costs around Rs.350 but are very comfortable to students and do bring smiles. Small Wins do Count!! This is another step towards the fulfilling journey of Sewa i.e. service.

Soil Health Awareness Camp in Varanasi

Soil functions as a vital living ecosystem for plants. It is important to focus on the health of the soil for the better produce and sustainable farming. Depleting soil quality could be a deterring factor for quality production in times to come.Keeping this in mind, Sewa International conducted a Soil Health Awareness camp on 3 September 2017, at Gangapur Village, Varanasi; where more than 100 farmers participated. The knowledge sharing session was followed by plant distribution and a felicitation ceremony for the farmers. They were given ‘Soil Health Certificates’ and saplings of ginger and Tomato plants, which were grown in Sewa International nursery.
The trainers of the camp were Mr. Surendra Singh, Professor Banaras Hindu University and Dr. Nagendra Rai, Indian Vegetable Research Center, Varanasi. The farmers were given pointers on the following:
    •    Attain correct pH of soil and build up the quality of soil to improve cropping.
    •    Save the vegetable crops from various bacteria and fungus.
    •    Methods to improve the soil health
    •    Maintain Proper soil drainage, tips on vegetable farming, and ways to increase their income.

TOILET AND HYGIENE PROJECT RUN BY SEWA INTERNATIONAL BHARAT

Sewa International is committed towards Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, especially in the state of UP which is in dire need of the movement. The big cities of state like Varanasi, Kanpur, and Agra are notorious for lack of sanitation. Sewa International believes that ensuring girls education is the best way forward for the country to meet its goal of a developed nation. Also by recognizing, understanding and addressing gender dimensions within water and sanitation projects promotes sanitation and can lead to increased household welfare, improved health, increased gender equality and environmental sustainability. It also increases the efficiency and the effectiveness of the development resources invested. By making toilets in Girls/Co-ed schools, SIB wants to ensure that no girl child leaves the school because of lack of toilets. Sewa International Bharat’s Varanasi chapter Sewa Kashi works tirelessly to promote these objectives. This month SIB has installed 7 toilets in Lucknow viz Ghulam Hussain Purwa, Vibhutikhand, Peernanagar, Dubagga, Tiwaripur Sitapur road, and Chinhat block under “Swacch-Shikshit-Kushal Kashi Program” (SSKKP).
Sewa Kashi had volunteer engagement for this lag of the project, Mr. Alok, and Ms. Monica. They helped the mentor of the
SSKKP Mr. Thiagrajan Ramanan  and Mrs. Jayanthi Ramanan  in providing on-ground support in Lucknow to ensure success in this national mission.

SCHOOL KITS DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMME IN TRIPURA

One just has to see to believe so many genuine smiles of these kids who have seemingly got their best Durga Puja gift ever! The occasion was the distribution of the innocuous school kits to 300 kids studying at Sewa International Bharat Learning Centres in Ashapara and Naisinghpara refugee camps deep in the ravines of North Tripura. The school kit comprised of six notebooks, a school bag and a pencil box full of stationery items. The drive was conducted at the behest of our center tutors, who asked for study aids like stationery and bag for effective teaching.
After the drive, gleeful eyes of the kids were a tell-tale sign of their zest for life and a provided a glimpse into a future full of hopes and promises.

The center was formally launched on 6th Oct 2017 in the august presence of Mr. Sanjay Hegde (Trustee) and Mr. Nishant Aggarwal (CEO), Sewa International. DRIVE FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE BY SEWA INTERNATIONAL BHARAT

When you think of treatment for people with severe and persistent mental illness, there is a range of treatments and modalities to help the affected person. For example hospitalization, medication, healthcare, skills building, speech therapy, and neuro therapy etc. Even if a person had the best in all these areas, without being treated with respect and dignity these services really become meaningless. Any good doctor will tell you that the belief that a medication will work for you is just as important as the medication itself. This concept has a corollary: how a person is treated when getting treatment is just as important as or more important than the treatment itself. Sewa International has been committed towards Divyang care and runs 3 projects under this vertical viz. Divya Vidyalaya Jawhar (Maharashtra), Samvedana Vikas Kendra, Latur (Maharashtra), Karunaii Trust, Chennai (Tamil Nadu). These institutes cater to children who have cerebral palsy, underdeveloped brain, blindness, and are deaf; they are from the underprivileged sections of society. Sewa International ensures that children with mental health conditions living in these projects can continue to live with dignity and have best of the care by health professionals. All the caretakers in the projects are sensitized towards the treatment and share the special bonds with these kids.
Sewa International ascertain the betterment in the lives of these children by lending support and treating them with dignity.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during their critical formative years but also as they mature into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders. An investment in realizing the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability.

It’s a good opportunity for the Artisans, Co-operatives, Farmers, SHGs, and Handicraftsmen to showcase and sell their products. Sewa International participates in these exhibitions and fairs bolstering the farm and non- farm initiatives of the project. In November, Sewa Uttarakhand participated in “Gauchar Mela” and “Augustyamuni Mela” in Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts from 14 Nov 2017 onwards. Sewa team put up the stall of non-farm products made under its Programs- Sewa Mahila Jyoti and Sewa Srujan. These products were prepared and packaged by the women associated with its Knitting centers and SHGs initiatives in Uttarakhand. The Member of Legislative Assembly of the Kedarnath constituency and District Magistrate of Rudraprayag visited SIB's stall and inquired about the projects running in the region. They appreciated the Sewa International  Bharat's efforts towards women empowerment through skill-based training and market linkages. • In November under the program “Swasthya Sahayogi Sewa”, Sewa Uttarakhand formed a Community Health Committee, for the establishment of broad approaches to health improvement that involves a wide range of activities and individuals. The aim is that each village and community participating in a health programme should establish a committee at the local level. The committee will coordinate and support the different activities and provide leadership for the community and will serve as the linkage with local and state level staff, involved in various programs and schemes run by the government. Community Health Committee is therefore crucial for broadening the approach and promoting the health at the village level.

A DAY IN SUN WITH HEBRON HOMELESS CENTER

The housing crisis has added to the homelessness situation in USA. More than 4 percent of adolescents and 10 percent of young adults nationwide were living on the street, in cars or shelters, or couch-surfing at some point in the last year, according to a sweeping study by the University of Chicago released in November 2017. We live in a strange world where we expect that a young person who suffered in their childhood has to get everything together when they're 17 before they get housing. No young person should ever be left to fend for themselves that way. But especially young people that have suffered. Once they do exit the environment that they have been residing in, isolation kicks in and they tend to gravitate towards people and choices that are maybe not the best for them. It is better to intervene when there is a homeless situation with kids, with support they could be steered towards a better tomorrow. With this view, Sewa USA team had an engaging, fun and learn session with the kids at Hebron Homeless shelter.  Volunteers played games with the kids inside and outside the house. They made craft together as well. Kids were very excited and were asking about the next session. Objective of the session was to make the kids happy. Happy kids means happy and stress free parents! It's our way of reminding these kids … it doesn't matter where
you are, where you go, that you still belong!
